Pressurized Walls, Bookcase Walls

It is unlikely that the cost of living in New York City will ever go down.  Finding an apartment is usually the most expensive bill New Yorkers have so many have chosen to share apartment cost with friends or co-workers.

One problem though is that 2 or 3 Bedroom apartments are usually much more expensive and harder to find then Studio or one-Bedroom apartments so savvy New Yorkers have chosen to have a temporary wall installed their apartment to add that extra bedroom.

Temporary Walls can come in many different forms from something as simple as hanging a curtain to having a temporary - pressurized wall installed by a professional wall company.

The Wall Factory installs temporary walls that allow you to create the extra room you need for a roommate, nursery or home office. There are two basic types of temporary walls that landlords currently allow.  Pressurized Walls or Bookcase Walls

Pressurized Walls look like and are built like regular walls with the exception that they are not screwed into the existing floor, walls or ceilings of your apartment. This is a technique that professional wall companies knows how to use that allow removal of the wall without leaving any permanent damage to your apartment.  There are many options that can be added to pressurized walls such as light panels to let light pass through to the rest of the apartment, air vents, opening windows, temporary closets, french doors and pocket doors.

The problem is that some buildings no longer allow pressurized walls since the city has been cracking down on how and where the walls can be installed in an apartment.  Some buildings still allow walls but only if they do not go all the way up to the celings and some buildings do not allow doors to be installed on the walls.  This of course decreases the privacy of the the room that is created in terms of both visual privacy and sound.  Some buildings also require building permits or an architects approval before a wall can be built which can be very expensive.

As an affordable option,  some buildings are now only allowing Bookcase temporary walls. These walls are basically a series of custom built bookcases that create a temporary wall.  Doors can be installed on the wall for extra privacy and most buildings allow the walls to be built up to the ceiling.

The Wall Factory installs both Pressurized Walls and Bookcase Walls.  Before signing your lease, see what type of walls your buildings allow.  Also, make sure that they do not force you to use a specific wall company which is not 100% legal for them to do in New York City.

My building recommended this company to me since they do not allow pressurized walls. I have to share my apartment with a roommate and we didn't know that the building didn't allow pressurized walls until after we moved in. Our mistake. So we contacted them about a bookcase wall, they sent someone out to take measurements because the apartment is situated where a straight bookcase wouldn't be enough to split the area we wanted into a room, and we wanted it wider on one section in order to fit the bed. They worked with us and even emailed a floorplan for exactly what we asked and the price was way better the bookcase walls we looked at online, and this was custom built! The bookcase went to the ceiling, and we had a French door put on, and it turned out beautifully! One side had a multitude of shelves and the other side looked just like a regular wall! I highly recommend this company!
